Who we are

The Directorate-General for Information Technologies and Cybersecurity (DG ITEC) is a trusted partner that empowers the European Parliament by delivering digitally advanced, secure, resilient, compliant and sustainable information and communications technology (ICT) services.

The Solution Design and Quality Assurance Unit (DESIQUAL) deals with the first and last stages of the IT solution development process. The Unit designs transversal software solutions according to business needs, performs business and technical analyses of user requests, acquires business solutions from the market, and carries out solution quality assurance, with a strong emphasis on application accessibility.

The Unit also runs the Digital Accessibility Competence Centre, with a view to promoting a culture of digital accessibility in the European Parliament.

 

Your tasks

The trainee will primarily focus on validating compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 and EN 301 549.

Description of tasks:

  • Conducting manual and automated testing of websites and web applications to identify accessibility issues;
  • Performing detailed compliance audits against the success criteria of WCAG 2.2 at A and AA conformance levels and the requirements of EN 301 549;
  • Accurately documenting identified accessibility issues, including detailed descriptions, steps to reproduce and severity levels;
  • Testing web content using assistive technologies, such as screen readers and screen magnifiers, to simulate the user experience for people with disabilities;
  • Preparing clear and concise reports summarising audit findings, including recommendations for remediation and best practices for developers and designers to follow;
  • Working closely with development, design, and content teams to provide guidance and feedback on accessibility issues, promoting a culture of 'shifting left' where accessibility is considered early in the development lifecycle.

 

You are

  • You are a highly analytical and detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in digital accessibility and inclusive design;
  • You have a foundational understanding of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and you are eager to learn and apply standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 and EN 301 549;
  • You are meticulous in your work, able to conduct thorough manual and automated tests, and you possess excellent written communication skills for documenting technical issues clearly and concisely;
  • You are a collaborative team player, ready to work with developers, designers, and content creators to promote a culture of accessibility from the start;
  • You have a desire to understand and simulate the user experience for people with disabilities and a commitment to helping create a more inclusive digital world.
