Strategy and Innovation Unit

The Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) provides the European Parliament with translation and other linguistic services for its communication in all official and working languages of the European Union.

Our mission is:

• To support the Members and administration of the European Parliament by making all content related to Parliament’s legislative, budgetary and scrutiny activities accessible in all official and working languages of the EU, ensuring transparency and legitimacy in these core functions;
• To uphold the European Parliament’s commitment to multilingualism, enabling equal treatment of all official and working languages and ensuring that all EU citizens can access and communicate with Parliament in these languages;
• To deliver high-quality multilingual communication services to the Members and administration of the European Parliament in text, audio and video formats, in a manner that is clear, inclusive and accessible to all citizens, including those with disabilities;
• To ensure that all language services provided by DG TRAD are delivered efficiently and sustainably, integrating innovative technologies and professional standards to meet the evolving needs of the European Parliament.

The Strategy and Innovation Unit in DG TRAD plays a horizontal role across the Directorate-General. It is a strategic hub that helps shape the DG’s long-term direction, align it with the Parliament’s broader priorities and coordinate innovation initiatives. 

Concretely, the unit:

•    Supports the Director-General and senior management with strategic planning of DG TRAD’s activities with Parliament’s evolving needs;
•    Drives innovation projects, often piloting and testing new tools and methods before they are mainstreamed (e.g. AI-assisted translation); 
•    Coordinates with other DGs of the Parliament to ensure DG TRAD contributes to projects with other DGs on a wide range of subjects, such as digitalisation, AI, accessibility and multilingualism;
•    Coordinates the annual reporting processes like the Annual Work Programme (AWP), Annual Activity Report (AAR), risk register and other cross-DG reporting activities;
•    Acts as an incubator for ideas that might later become DG-wide practices.

As a trainee, you will join a team working on various activities and projects, including AI-related projects, with direct impact on multilingualism. Depending on your profile, you may be involved in:

• Training, testing and evaluating large language models (LLMs) and other AI solutions for multilingual translation;
• Supporting the development of tools and prototypes that apply AI to translation workflows;
• Drafting documentation, technical notes and presentations to communicate project results clearly to different audiences;
• Contributing to research on emerging technologies, identifying promising approaches and assessing their feasibility for DG TRAD;
• Assisting with overseeing projects, including contacts with project managers, keeping a scoreboard and giving input to reports;
• Assisting with strategic planning activities, including the preparation of briefings, reports and input for reporting-related activities.

As a prospective trainee, you are:

  skilled in analysing and problem solving, with the ability to propose creative solutions;
• A good communicator, both orally and in writing, in English and/or French, and open to improving your language skills;

The Strategy and Innovation Unit is looking for candidates with a strong interest in AI, innovation and multilingual communication, ideally with background or curiosity in areas such as AI, machine learning, data analysis, accessibility, or strategic policy work.
