Your tasks

As a translation trainee in the Dutch Translation Unit of the European Parliament, you will have the opportunity to translate texts relating to Parliament’s legislative work and other core activities into Dutch. You may be asked to translate a very wide variety of texts covering political, budgetary, technical and administrative matters. You will translate under the supervision of a translator-mentor, who will guide you, teach you the current translation workflows and procedures, and revise your translations as necessary.

This will give you the opportunity to learn, to improve your translations and to benefit as much as possible from your traineeship. Additionally, depending on the projects the Directorate-General is currently undertaking, you may be asked to adapt or modify texts in different formats, for example audio files and website content.

Please note that there may be several linguistic traineeships available for the Dutch language. You can apply for up to three Schuman traineeships.

You are

Are you our ideal candidate? As a prospective translation trainee:

  • You have a perfect command of Dutch (native-speaker equivalent);
  • You have an in-depth knowledge of English and a very good knowledge of at least one of the other official EU languages;
  • You have a university degree (bachelor of at least three years);
  • You are interested in the European Union and would like to gain work experience in a multilingual environment;
  • You have experience with, or are keen to learn how to use, CAT tools, especially SDL Studio;
  • You possess strong teamwork and communication skills, which enable you to work as part of a team of language professionals, but you can also work independently.

This is what we offer:

  • A traineeship in the Dutch Translation Unit, where all kinds of texts are translated from the official languages of the EU into Dutch;
  • Personal supervision by several translators (both Dutch and Flemish);
  • A look behind the scenes of the European Parliament;
  • A large number of courses to increase your knowledge, for example about translation tools, the European Union and the European Parliament;
  • A good atmosphere among colleagues and lots of contact with other trainees from 27 European countries;
  • A professional experience in Luxembourg, in a multicultural, international environment.

If you are interested in this offer, please submit a motivation letter in Dutch stating your reasons for applying for this traineeship. The motivation letter should not exceed 600 words. Keep in mind that we will use this letter to assess your language skills in Dutch.

Please also submit the relevant supporting documents (university diplomas, transcript of records, etc.) and a copy of your CV in English. You should upload the motivation letter and the supporting documents as a single PDF file.

The two traineeship offers for the Dutch Translation Unit are identical. Applying for only one of them is enough, there is no need to apply for both post A and post B.
