Who we are

The Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) provides the European Parliament with translation and other linguistic services for its communication in all official and working languages of the European Union.

Our mission is:

  • To support the Members and administration of the European Parliament by making all content related to Parliament’s legislative, budgetary and scrutiny activities accessible in all official and working languages of the EU, ensuring transparency and legitimacy in these core functions;
  • To uphold the European Parliament’s commitment to multilingualism, enabling equal treatment of all official and working languages and ensuring that all EU citizens can access and communicate with Parliament in these languages;
  • To deliver high-quality multilingual communication services to the Members and administration of the European Parliament in text, audio and video formats, in a manner that is clear, inclusive and accessible to all citizens, including those with disabilities;
  • To ensure that all language services provided by DG TRAD are delivered efficiently and sustainably, integrating innovative technologies and professional standards to meet the evolving needs of the European Parliament.

 

Your tasks

As part of the Directorate for Support and Technological Services for Translation, the Development of Applications and IT Systems Unit (DAS) is responsible for developing the appropriate IT tools to assist language professionals and other staff members in their daily tasks.

As a trainee, you will join a dynamic agile team working on projects that apply Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to the translation process.

Depending on your profile, you will be assigned one or more of the following tasks: experimenting with AI models, analysing and preparing datasets, evaluating models performance, supporting the integration of AI components into our applications, and drafting user-friendly documentation.

As part of this well-organised team, you will have the opportunity to acquire and apply best practices in software development and AI research, enhancing your skills and contributing to innovative projects in the field of language technologies. 

 

You are

Keen to be part of a high-level IT engineers team in the European Parliament and work in a multicultural environment? Interested in developing your skills in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applied to translation? Able to communicate orally and in writing in English and/or French and want to develop new language skills? Highly motivated with interest in IT and appetite for new challenges? Good in analysing and problem solving? Excellent in teamwork and interpersonal skills?

The DAS unit is looking for candidates with a strong IT background and a keen interest in AI to participate in small and large-scale projects applied to translation. A background in computational linguistics, text mining or related fields, combined with programming skills and some understanding of Natural Language Processing techniques, would be particularly welcome. Familiarity with terminology management or terminology databases, experience with scripting or prompting with large language models, or an interest in translation quality assessment and multilingual text processing would be considered an advantage.
