Who we are

Role of the Legal Service:

To provide legal advice to the Institution, its organs and its General Secretariat and represent it in litigation proceedings before the Courts of the European Union as well as national courts.

 

Description of the Data Protection and Transparency Unit:

The Unit deals with matters relating to data protection and transparency within the institution.

It also has particular responsibility, inter alia, for matters relating to:

  • The application of Regulation 1049/2001 on public access to European Parliament documents;
  • The application of Regulation 45/2001 on the processing of personal data by the Community institutions and bodies and on the free movement of such data;
  • Data Protection Law.

By joining our Unit, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the handling of litigation cases falling within the Unit’s remit and to attend at least one hearing before the EU Court of Justice.

 

Your tasks

Description of tasks entrusted to trainees:

  • Assisting the Unit’s lawyers and Head of Unit by:
    • Undertaking research work (doctrine, jurisprudence in European and national law);
    • Carrying out preparatory work relating to the Unit’s files (legal opinions, court cases, and other files).
  • Attending parliamentary committee meetings in Brussels and a plenary session in Strasbourg;
  • Attending internal meetings;
  • Attending a hearing before the Court of Justice or the General Court in Luxembourg;
  • Drawing up internal memos;
  • Any other task relating to the daily work of the Unit’s lawyers.

Selection criteria:

  • Law Degree - preferably Master 2;
  • Advanced level in French and English.
