Who we are
The Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) provides the European Parliament with translation and other linguistic services for its communication in all official and working languages of the European Union.
Our mission is:
- To support the Members and administration of the European Parliament by making all content related to Parliament’s legislative, budgetary and scrutiny activities accessible in all official and working languages of the EU, ensuring transparency and legitimacy in these core functions;
- To uphold the European Parliament’s commitment to multilingualism, enabling equal treatment of all official and working languages and ensuring that all EU citizens can access and communicate with Parliament in these languages;
- To deliver high-quality multilingual communication services to the Members and administration of the European Parliament in text, audio and video formats, in a manner that is clear, inclusive and accessible to all citizens, including those with disabilities;
- To ensure that all language services provided by DG TRAD are delivered efficiently and sustainably, integrating innovative technologies and professional standards to meet the evolving needs of the European Parliament.
Your tasks
As a translation trainee in the Portuguese Translation Unit of the European Parliament, you will have the opportunity to translate texts relating to Parliament’s legislative work and other core activities into Portuguese.
You may be asked to translate a very wide variety of texts covering political, budgetary, technical and administrative matters. You will translate under the supervision of a translator-mentor, who will guide you, teach you the current translation workflows and procedures, and revise your translations as necessary. This will give you the opportunity to learn, to improve your translations and to benefit as much as possible from your traineeship. Additionally, depending on the projects the Directorate-General is currently undertaking, you may be asked to adapt or modify texts in different formats, for example audio files and website content.
Please note that there may be several linguistic traineeships available for Portuguese. You can apply for up to three Schuman traineeships.
You are
As a prospective translation trainee:
- You have a perfect command of Portuguese (native-speaker equivalent);
- You have an in-depth knowledge of English and/or French and a very good knowledge of at least one of the other official EU languages;
- You possess strong team-working and communication skills, which will enable you to work as part of a team of language professionals;
- You have experience with, or are keen to learn how to use, CAT tools, especially SDL Studio.
