The Directorate-General for Translation and Clear Language (DG TRAD) provides the European Parliament with translation and other linguistic services in all official and working languages of the European Union.

Our mission is:

• To support the Members and administration of the European Parliament by making all content related to Parliament’s legislative, budgetary and scrutiny activities accessible in all official and working languages, ensuring transparency and legitimacy in these core functions;
• To uphold the European Parliament’s commitment to multilingualism, enabling equal treatment of all official and working languages and ensuring that all EU citizens can access and communicate with Parliament in these languages;
• To deliver high-quality multilingual communication services to the Members and administration of the European Parliament in text, audio and video formats, in a manner that is clear, inclusive and accessible to all citizens, including those with disabilities;
• To ensure that all language services provided by DG TRAD are delivered efficiently and sustainably, integrating innovative technologies while upholding our professional standards to meet the evolving needs of the European Parliament.

The Pre-Processing and Translation Memories Management Unit (PreTrad) in the Directorate-General for Translation and Clear Language of the European Parliament is in charge of the processes prior to translation. It is responsible for supplying automatically created pre-translation packages for internal and external translators in order to maximise the (re-)use of the available referencing materials and previous translations. Our main activities include providing advanced referencing for incoming translation work, monitoring the existing workflow automations and contributing to the design, testing and implementation of enhancements to our computer assisted translation (CAT) tools and other supporting technologies.

A traineeship with us will offer you the opportunity to become familiar with the EP’s latest technologies and daily workflows in the preparatory process of translation. You will have the chance to discover the underlying organisation and workflows, as well as the technical aspects of ensuring a large-scale translation process into the 24 official languages of the European Union, which covers 552 language combinations.

You will get to know and use our internal tools, learn from our experts and have access to internal training courses. You will gain an insight into the EP’s activities and services and an understanding of what it entails to work for Europe.

As a prospective trainee for the Directorate for Language Technology, Support and Innovation, you:

• Have a background in translation and/or languages;
• Have a strong interest in and experience with computer assisted translation (CAT) tools and machine translation;
• Possess strong team-working and communication skills;
• Have an in-depth knowledge of English and a very good command of at least one of the other official EU languages;
• Have obtained/will obtain a university degree (level 6 of EQF or higher) at least three months before the starting date of the traineeship.
