Who we are

The Directorate-General for Citizens' Rights, Justice and Institutional Affairs (DG IUST) organises and facilitates the work of parliamentary committees in key areas such as culture, education, legal and constitutional affairs, gender equality, civil liberties, petitions and democracy protection. Through high-quality research, expert advice, and administrative support, DG IUST enables Members and committees to shape sound legislative and policy outcomes.

Inside DG IUST, Policy Departments are research units responsible for bringing - both in-house and external - high- level independent expertise, analyses and policy advice. They provide parliamentary committee with briefings and studies, organise workshops, and draft the Fact Sheets on the EU, which provide an overview of European laws and policies and of the European Parliament’s contribution to them.

More specifically, the Policy Department for Citizens, Equality and Culture (Poldep IUST-A) delivers expertise to the CULT, FEMM and PETI Committees. It covers many fields ranging from cultural heritage, linguistic diversity, higher education, information and media, youth, to gender equality and gender mainstreaming, and problems concerning the implementation of EU legislation. It works in close contact with both the committee secretariats and the Members, and provides tailor made solutions serving the needs of rapporteurs, working groups, monitoring groups, as well as of parliamentary delegations and missions.

It coordinates expertise products (e.g. studies or briefings) requested by Committee Coordinators and feeds directly into the legislative and political work of the Parliament.

 

Your tasks

In Policy Department IUST-A, you will be able to gain valuable insights into how the European Parliament and its committees and research units work. 

  • You will mainly follow the work of the FEMM sector that aims to provide timely and authoritative expertise to the FEMM Committee, and you will occasionally support the PETI sector;
  • You will be able to work across all the Policy Departments’ activities e.g. by assisting the administrators in research and preparation of briefing notes and studies;
  • You will edit and proof-read briefings and studies, update factsheets, participate in Committee meetings and attend internal and external events.

 

You are

  • Someone with a sound knowledge of how the EU functions, curious to learn how the European Parliament works and a strong interest in policy analysis;
  • Quick to grasp new procedures and tasks;
  • A team player who is proactive and comfortable working both on your own initiative and also with other colleagues, and keen to learn from their varied backgrounds and experiences;
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office applications;
  • Someone with good organisational skills and an ability to work to tight deadlines;
  • Someone with very good drafting skills in English, both written and verbal;
  • In possession of a university degree (level 6 of EQF or higher) at least three months before the starting date of the traineeship.

An academic background in law or political science and any knowledge/experience related to the FEMM/PETI Committee would be an asset.
