Who we are
As the voice of citizens, the European Parliament stands for European democracy. The Directorate-General for Communication (DG COMM) amplifies its message of the Parliament to reach every corner of Europe. We help connect Members of Parliament (MEPs) to the people they represent, and we communicate what the Parliament is, what it does, and what it stands for. When Parliament speaks, we make sure it’s heard.
We are committed communication professionals coming from various professional and academic backgrounds.
The Spokesperson’s and Information Integrity Unit is directly attached to the Director-General for Communication under DG COMM.
The Unit is led by the Spokesperson, delivering on-the-record information to media and in support of the EP President, the Secretary-General, DG COMM as well as other EP Directorates-General and services. It works closely with the Directorate for Media and all other parliamentary services to ensure information integrity and to counter and build societal resilience against information manipulation through:
- Answering queries from media;
- Strategic communication and outreach - preparing and anticipating narratives that support strategic communication;
- Detecting, preventing and countering information manipulation attempts affecting the EP and its office holders - in cooperation with other DG COMM services, other Directorate-Generals, EU institutions and Member States;
- Developing countermeasures addressing attempts to damage the European Parliament and, more generally, the European Union;
- Providing ad hoc risk assessments and ad hoc support to Members and dedicated resources to counter foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) and disinformation;
- Coordinating an expertise hub for DG COMM and EP services’ actions on disinformation and manipulated information targeting the Parliament and parliamentary democracy – from prevention to detection and response;
- Supporting DG COMM’s outreach units in their activities in the area (dedicated trainings, presentations, development of materials);
- Contributing to a more resilient and prepared institution, via trainings, guides and awareness-raising activities for Members and staff;
- Implementing pre-bunking and resilience building measures (awareness-raising and media literacy tools) in cooperation with institutional partners (EC, EEAS);
- Cooperation with partners across EU institutions, Member States and civil society.
