Who we are

The Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) provides the European Parliament with translation and other linguistic services for its communication in all official and working languages of the European Union.

Our mission is:

  • To support the Members and administration of the European Parliament by making all content related to Parliament’s legislative, budgetary and scrutiny activities accessible in all  official and working languages of the EU, ensuring transparency and legitimacy in these core functions;
  • To uphold the European Parliament’s commitment to multilingualism, enabling equal treatment of all official and working languages and ensuring that all EU citizens can access and communicate with Parliament in these languages;
  • To deliver high-quality multilingual communication services to the Members and administration of the European Parliament in text, audio and video formats, in a manner that is clear, inclusive and accessible to all citizens, including those with disabilities;
  • To ensure that all language services provided by DG TRAD are delivered efficiently and sustainably, integrating innovative technologies and professional standards to meet the evolving needs of the European Parliament.

The Training and Traineeship Unit (TTU) ensures DG TRAD’s application of the European Parliament’s Learning and Development policy. It defines the internal training strategy and establishes the training policy. In its endeavour to support DG TRAD staff in developing their key competencies, TTU defines, together with the relevant stakeholders, the learning needs and the resulting learning solutions. TTU manages, delivers and designs DG TRAD-specific training.

In response to the fast-changing working environment in DG TRAD, staff need constantly to adapt their skills to keep the pace with the new developments and trends.  TTU, therefore, needs to react in time and match the defined learning needs with appropriate L&D solutions.

Information technology and computers have become part and parcel of everyday working life. With this, learning is also changing and so are methods of training and learning environment. To provide DG TRAD staff with the means and the ability to re-shape their knowledge and skills in line with ever-changing needs, TTU has to complement traditional training and courses with online learning materials, which allow DG TRAD colleagues to learn: anytime, anywhere, at any pace; with the relevant focus on their learning gaps.
