Welcome to the Digital Accessibility (DA) Team!

We are a passionate team of experts in different areas of accessibility, such as software, web, documents and policy. 

The DA Team serves as a central hub for knowledge and resources, empowering the EP to advance in digital accessibility.

We focus on providing comprehensive support and expertise, fostering a culture of accessibility across the organisation, but we also provide assessment and remediation services when needed.

In our Team, you will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

The DA Team works within the Solution Design and Quality Assurance Unit (DESIQUAL) in the Directorate for Business Solutions of DG ITEC. We are currently five colleagues, based in both Brussels and Luxembourg.

 

Your tasks

You will work very closely with the Team Leader, being involved from arrival to departure in many different tasks during the traineeship. This close working experience will greatly enhance your experience, allowing us to mentor you in many different areas of expertise.

  • Supporting the Competence Centre on Digital Accessibility:
    • Researching on the accessibility of existing digital content within the Parliament;
    • Creating user guides and tutorials on how to make digital content accessible;
    • Supporting the organisation of training workshops on digital accessibility for staff;
    • Supporting the communication with the IT professionals (service mailbox management) and contribute to enhancing the communication with DG ITEC’s stakeholders;
    • Support meetings organised by the CCDA (i.e. taking notes, drafting follow-up emails) and events (info sessions, workshops or inter-institutional events);
    • Collect and organise feedback from various stakeholders when needed;
    • Maintain information present across the internal tools of the CCDA (e.g. SharePoint, Teams);
    • Analysis of existing information on DA-related subjects, drafting and editing documents when needed;
    • Undertake and propose individual projects according to availability.
  • Supporting the Digital Accessibility Officers Network:
    • Support the secretariat of the DAO Network (agenda, minutes, list of presence, notes, speeches, etc.);
    • Preparation of presentation material (PPT, infographics, data visualisation, etc.);
    • Support the DAO Network Microsoft Teams Channel (answering questions, file/relevant document management, etc.).
  • Content Creation:
    • Evaluating the accessibility of existing documents, webpages, and multimedia content;
    • Creating alternative text descriptions for images and other non-text content;
    • Assisting with the development of accessible versions of complex documents or presentations;
    • Monitoring and reporting on the accessibility of newly published content;
    • Update of templates, guidelines and checklists.
  • Communication and Outreach:
    • Developing communication materials to raise awareness about digital accessibility within the Parliament;
    • Contributing to the creation of presentations on digital accessibility for stakeholders;
    • Supporting the organisation of events to promote best practices in digital accessibility.
  • Learning and Development:
    • Strong knowledge in the latest digital accessibility standards and guidelines (WCAG and EN 301 549);
    • Shadowing experienced staff to learn about different aspects of digital accessibility implementation;
    • Preparing reports and presentations on the trainee's learnings and contributions to the team;
    • Perform benchmarking on external training offers from external providers on Digital Accessibility.

 

You are

  • Capable of writing clearly in English, preferably with some experience in drafting assessment reports, or in communication/ journalism/ business or public relations;
  • More than at ease in using Microsoft Office applications and optionally Adobe Acrobat PRO;
  • Advantageous:
    • If possible, knowledgeable or familiar with EN 301 549 Standard and WCAG 2.1;
    • User experience with manual accessibility audit and remediation of documents, websites and web applications testing, and assistive technology;
    • Experience with project management and documentation;
    • Background in multimedia/web/graphic design also appreciated.
