Who we are

Tasks of the Legal Service:

to provide legal advice to the Institution, its organs and its General Secretariat and represent it in litigation proceedings before the Courts of the European Union as well as national courts.

Description of the Unit for Structural and Cohesion Policies:

  • The Unit for Structural and Cohesion Policies is one of three Units that make up the Legal Service’s Directorate for Legislative Affairs. Members of the Unit serve as legal advisers to Parliament’s TRAN (transport), AGRI (agriculture), PECH (fisheries), REGI (regional development) and CULT (culture) Committees. They are also responsible for litigation in the corresponding policy areas;
  • By joining our Unit, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in legislative work and observe it at close quarters by taking part in preparations for drawing up and negotiating EU legislation that has a major impact on our daily lives. In addition, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the handling of litigation cases within the Unit’s responsibility and to attend at least one hearing before the EU Court of Justice.

 

Your tasks

  • Assisting the Units’ lawyers and Heads of Unit with:
    • Research work (doctrine, case-law);
    • The preparation of files (documentation, analysis);
  • Analysing and discussing with the Unit’s lawyers the key points of pre-litigation and litigation cases;
  • Attending parliamentary committee meetings in Brussels and a plenary session in Strasbourg;
  • Attending meetings of the Directorate;
  • Attending and reporting back from hearings before the Court of Justice in Luxembourg;
  • Any other task relating to the daily work of the Unit’s lawyers.

Selection criteria:

  • Law Degree - preferably Master 2
  • Basic language skills: English and French
