Who we are

As a trainee in the Directorate-General for the Presidency (DG PRES), you will be part of a DG, which has a crucial role in a wide spectrum of the European Parliament's (EP) activities. Our DG is involved in the legislative process from the very beginning, when the legislative initiatives are submitted to the EP, and throughout the process, during which our lawyer linguists ensure the quality of the legislative texts, accompanying members and committees in their work.

We are in charge of the organisation and documentation of the plenary sessions, and also deal with the relations with other EU institutions. Furthermore, our DG provides services to the members, regarding both administrative matters and their political activity, such as parliamentary questions to the other institutions.

We are also at the service of citizens and the public, dealing with public access to documents and relations with interest representatives, are responsible for the archives of the European Parliament, and are responsible for the official mail of the President and the Secretary General. The EP's protocol service, dealing with, among other things, the reception of visiting dignitaries and delegations and the preparation of visits outside Parliament by the President and the main EP bodies, is also part of our DG.

Our Unit belongs to the Directorate for the Plenary, responsible for preparing, organising, running and following-up plenary sessions. The Members’ Administration Unit is simultaneously “legal”, “political”, “administrative” and “at the service” of the Members of the European Parliament. We manage procedures relating to mandates and immunities of MEPs and changes in the composition of political bodies and groups. The Unit also implements and gives advice to Members on the rules concerning transparency and ethical obligations of MEPs.

In concrete terms:

  • We assist the MEPs with formalities at the beginning and end of their mandate. For this purpose, we are in close cooperation with the political groups and national authorities. We provide a wide range of services and advice to MEPs and their offices throughout their mandate;
  • We follow closely the composition of the Parliament and changes in its political bodies (in particular Committees and Delegations). In this regard, we cooperate closely with the responsible Directorate-Generals and the Political Groups;
  • As the Secretariat of the Advisory Committee on the Conduct of Members, we advise the incoming (and outgoing) MEPs on their ethical and transparency obligations, like conflict of interests, declarations of private interests, travel declarations, and the registration of gifts received by them - with discretion, confidentiality and good service;
  • We help the incoming (and outgoing) members to comply with their various other transparency obligations, like publication of meetings with lobbyists;
  • We are in close cooperation and interaction with a large number of services across the European Parliament. With our high professionalism, we build good networks with colleagues working in different domains of the Secretariat;
  • We are a compact, multicultural and multilingual team of EP officials who appreciate trainees and are ready to offer them a unique experience during their traineeship!

Your tasks

Drafting briefing notes and summaries on current debates that take place in the Plenary and in different Committees, such as the Constitutional Affairs and Legal Affairs Committees, on issues that affect our work.

  • Drafting answers to queries from citizens and journalists concerning the mandate and conduct of members;
  • Assistance in preparing lists and statistics that concern MEPs and managing documents;
  • Delivering various services to outgoing and incoming MEPs within the remit of our Unit;
  • Monitoring of national elections and their potential impact on the MEPs.

You are

A multidimensional, service-minded and curious person, who is:

  • Interested in legal aspects of mandate of MEPs, politics and EU affairs in general, as well as the “DNA” of the European Parliament;
  • Willing to discover all about the functioning and the complexity of the Parliament and its work. Experience in working or dealing with politicians or parliamentarians would be an asset;
  • Equipped with very good drafting skills, very good interpersonal and relational skills and very good knowledge of English and/or French (any other European languages are more than welcome!);
  • Equipped with very good IT knowledge and - again as an asset - experience in producing lists and statistics from databases;
  • Happy to work in a multicultural environment and be part of a great team, which appreciates your fresh ideas and good questions.

Academic background in law, European affairs, political sciences, administration -  you name it... are all welcome, we are not restricted to lawyers only.

The European Parliament is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace. We welcome all candidates, regardless of their geographical, racial or ethnic origin, political or religious beliefs, age, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, civil status, or family situation.
