Who we are

The Directorate General for Internal Policies of the Union (DG IPOL) is responsible for organising the work of Parliament's committees dealing with internal policies and for assisting Members in the exercise of the legislative, budgetary and oversight powers conferred upon the European Parliament.

The Directorate for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs retains 5 parliamentary committees (Secretariat of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), Secretariat of the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI), Secretariat of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO), Secretariat of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), Secretariat of the Committee on Petitions (PETI)) as well as the Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs providing support to the Members of the various committees in their daily legislative & non-legislative work, to the President’s Cabinet and to other parliamentary bodies in shaping legislation and exercising democratic scrutiny over EU internal policies.

The Directorate and its units contribute to the legislative process, ie. adopting reports submitted to Plenary, conducting negotiations with the Council on EU legislation, adopting own-initiative reports, organising hearings with experts or petitioners, scrutinising other EU bodies and institutions’ action and organising delegations to Member States or third countries.

We are characterised by close and regular in-house contacts, ie. hierarchy of the Directorate-General as well as the Secretariat-General of the European Parliament, parliamentary committee secretariats and Chairs, working groups or parliamentary delegations, tight and strong relations with national authorities. The Directorate coordinates financial dossiers as well as human resources aspects, provides support to the Heads of Unit while targeting the objectives of DG IPOL and assists its whole Directorate staff.

 

Your tasks

In our Directorate you will gain valuable insight into all procedural and political aspects of the European Parliament, in particular in all of its above-mentioned competence fields.

During your internship, you will work across the full amount of the Directorate’s activities. You will assist the Director and its secretariat in their daily work, participate in committee meetings, conduct research and draft background documentation on recurring subjects, contribute to the activities of the secretariat and provide administrative support, attend EP internal and external events.

 

You are

  • Dynamic and enthusiastic about legislative and non-legislative issues;
  • Able to communicate, professional and confidential;
  • Able to summarize content concisely and identify relevant sources of information as to the corresponding work of the different EU Institutions and/or national authorities;
  • Familiar with the rules and policies of the European Parliament.
