Who we are

The Directorate-General for Internal Policies of the Union (DG IPOL) is responsible for organising the work of the Parliament’s committees dealing with the EU’s internal policies, and for assisting Members in the exercise of the legislative, budgetary and oversight powers conferred upon the European Parliament.

Secretariat of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) is the committee responsible for topical policy areas such as climate change, the protection of biodiversity, the circular economy, public health, food safety, the use of chemicals and pesticides - just to name a few. For this reason, the ENVI Committee was the key committee dealing with the European Green Deal and the European Health Union during the last legislature.

The ENVI Secretariat is composed of a dynamic, versatile and multicultural team of around 35 people. The Secretariat provides Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in the ENVI Committee with written and oral assistance (preparing basic files, briefing notes, organisation of hearings, voting lists, draft reports and opinions, amendments) and helps to organise the work of the parliamentary body by drafting agendas, notes for the chair and political group coordinators.

The Secretariat also assists the committee in scrutinising the work of the European Commission and of the specialised agencies falling under ENVI’s remit.

As a trainee starting in Autumn 2024, you will work at a time when the parliamentary business restarts, with inter alia the hearings of the new Commissioner-nominees.

The competences of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, as well as more information on its activities can be found here.

Under the guidance of an administrator from the ENVI Secretariat, you are supposed to:

  • Provide support in all areas of work of the ENVI Secretariat: analysis of Commission proposals and other Commission documents, background analysis, briefing notes, preparation of committee meetings and coordinators’ meetings, attending and reporting back from meetings and events;
  • Assist on the on-going legislative and non-legislative reports and opinions;
  • Attend committee meetings, shadow rapporteurs meetings as well as trilogue meetings, to get an overview of the issues related to the policies areas covered by ENVI;
  • Provide support in drafting the ENVI newsletter: compiling, editing, proofreading;
  • Compile and circulate a daily email with a compilation of press reports about news falling under  ENVI’s remit;
  • Assist on the drafting of the ENVI newsletters on delegated and implementing acts.

Support in the fulfilment of other horizontal tasks and perform other tasks upon request.
