Who we are

The Directorate-General for Internal Policies of the Union (DG IPOL) is responsible for organising the work of the Parliament’s committees dealing with the EU’s internal policies, and for assisting Members in the exercise of the legislative, budgetary and oversight powers conferred upon the European Parliament.

The Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) is responsible for:

  • Coordination at Union level of national legislation in the sphere of the Internal Market and for the Customs Union, in particular:

(a) The free movement of goods including the harmonisation of technical standards;

(b) The right of establishment;

(c) Freedom to provide services except in the financial and postal sectors;

  • The functioning of the single market, including measures aimed at the identification and removal of potential obstacles to the implementation of the single market, including the digital single market;
  • The promotion and protection of the economic interests of consumers, except for public health and food safety issues;
  • Policy and legislation regarding the enforcement of single market rules and consumer rights.

 

Your tasks

We offer a highly diversified and intellectually challenging position as a trainee in a dynamic environment that values and fosters both teamwork and personal initiative. The selected candidate will be involved in the legislative process within the Committee in policy areas of its remit (see above).

They will assist the team of administrators responsible for the specific dossiers that the secretariat is dealing with. They will carry out a wide variety of tasks in relation to these dossiers, which includes the following:

  • Attend Committee and Coordinator meetings, to get an overview of the sensitive issues at stake inherent to policies dealt with by IMCO;
  • Assist in drafting internal information and feedback notes, memoranda, minutes and summaries of Committee meetings, public hearings and conferences;
  • Help in carrying out background research/notes in view of the preparation of draft reports, opinions and working documents;
  • Assist in the preparation of Shadow meetings and in drafting follow-up notes of them;
  • Assist with technical work such as: checking amendments and voting-lists, updating four-column documents;
  • Provide technical assistance during trilogue negotiations and hearings;
  • Attend Commission expert groups and provide feedback notes; assist with the scrutiny of delegated and implementing acts.

 

You are

Education

  • Education attested by a diploma and/or work undertaken in a field relevant to the committee’s policy areas;
  • Knowledge of EU law will be considered an asset;
  • Very good communication skills in English both orally and written (working language of the unit); good knowledge of French will be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications.


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of EU legislative procedures and EU consumer rights will be considered an asset.
