The Secretariat to the Committee on Budgetary Control supports the work of the Committee Chair and Members on their daily work. The team prepares and ensures smooth running of committee meetings, assisting each Rapporteur and the Chair to go through the agenda points of all meetings. The main responsibility is to proceed to the final approval of the implementation of the budget of all Union bodies through the annual discharge procedure.
The Secretariat also works on legislative and non-legislative files mainly concerning the protection of the EU’s financial interests. A traineeship at the Secretariat would provide a comprehensive overview of all the EU policy areas where the Union’s money is spent whilst examining whether EU policies and programmes achieve their objectives and added value. The Secretariat cooperates closely with the European Court of Auditors (ECA) and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). This is a relatively small but dynamic team; dedication and team spirit are essential values for us.
As a trainee, you will be swiftly integrated into the team, assisting Members in carrying out their budgetary control duties. You will be fully involved in the discharge procedure, in particular to the decentralised agencies, from the outset of the presentation of the annual ECA report to the vote in the committee. You will actively participate in the preparation and follow-up of committee meetings and, under supervision, you will be given tasks and responsibilities, fully contributing to the preparation of the discharge reports. This will allow you to get an insider’s understanding of a great variety of EU policies.
If you have a solid background in accounting and/or auditing, are interested in acquiring more knowledge about EU policies and procedures, and wish to understand the functioning of a parliamentary committee covering a broad range of issues, you will enjoy being part of our team. We look for someone who is highly motivated, eager to learn and to contribute to our work. You will need excellent drafting skills and the ability to react quickly to requests. Working in a political environment also requires flexibility and sensitivity.
